1 killed, 2 hurt in building collapse
One person was killed and two others injured when a portion of an under-construction building collapsed in North Delhi’s Lahori Gate during heavy downpour in the city on Monday afternoon.
Investigators said they suspect poor construction material led to the collapse. A case of causing death by negligence has been was registered against the contractor.
The victim has been identified as Mukarram, 33, a native of Bataoli village in UP. He worked as a daily-wage labourer and lived in a locality close to the collapse site.
Mukarram and a few other labourers had been working to raise a wall of a shop after bringing down a dilapidated one.
However, at the time of the collapse that took place at 4.45 pm, only Mukarram and two other labourers were working at the site. Local shopkeepers said a loud sound of collapse and a man’s cries for help drew their attention to the incident. Many rushed to the collapse site only to find Mukarram buried under rubble. They joined hands to remove debris and pull him out. Two other injured labourers were admitted to a local hospital.
The police and the fire department too had been informed soon after the incident, but by the time they reached the spot, the victim had been shifted to Lok Nayak Hospital.
However, Mukarram su-ccumbed to his injuries before the doctors could begin treatment. The victim had suffered serious injuries to his head and these are suspected to ha-ve caused his death. In April, two labourers were killed and a few injured when the top two floors of a building had collapsed in Lahori Gate Market.
