New pipelines in Old Delhi to boost water pressure

In a bid to streamline water supply in low pressure areas, the Delhi Jal Board has prepared an action plan to replace old pipelines with hydraulic modelling system.

In a bid to streamline water supply in low pressure areas, the Delhi Jal Board has prepared an action plan to replace old pipelines with hydraulic modelling system. The innovative technique seeks to solve the water supply problems that have been continuing over many years in areas such as Chandni Chowk, Sadar and Paharganj.

Water minister Kapil Mishra said despite several efforts, the DJB was unable to end the water crisis in Old Delhi. “It was found that the problem has persisted as the water pipelines are too old and have not been laid in a systematic manner. To overcome this, the DJB has prepared a plan to lay water pipelines under hydraulic modelling technique,” he said.

He said that the residents of Old Delhi complain that water supply has been a perennial problem in their area. “To deal with this, the DJB will start laying of these pipelines in these areas to make water available to every home,” he said.

He added that the project has been initiated from Raja Garden and will soon be implemented in the Old Delhi areas in the next eight to nine months. He said that the benefits of the model are varied, including systemic flow of supply water. It also helps in saving water, proper billing and proper overall management of water.

Delhi Jal Board CEO Keshav Chandra said the city’s infrastructure has not adhered to the basic water supply system, due to which streamlined water supply has been compromised. “Hydraulic modelling is an engineering method to ensure that the water supply is normalised in the areas. The DJB undertakes such models, especially in the areas which face scarcity of water,” he said, adding that the model is being implemented in all parts of the city, which face low pressure water supply and where the old water pipelines have to be replaced.
