Unsafe Delhi: Six women raped daily, says police
Each day six women are raped, 13 molested, 27 others are targeted by the snatchers in the national capital, according to the Delhi police. The police records also show that 37 burglaries were reported everyday from January to September this year.
The number of rapes in Delhi registered a rise in 2016, with data suggesting an average of six cases every day. As many as 1,685 cases of rape were reported in 2016 till September 30, compared to1675 cases during the same period in 2015.
Data also revealed that 3,305 cases of molestation and 753 cases of insult to the modesty of the women, 2,653 cases of kidnapping of the women, 379 cases of abduction of women were reported till the end of September this year.
Senior police official said that in maximum numbers rape cases belonged to the age group of 21-35 years. The official added that 60 to 65 per cent of women victims are between 15-30 years old. Almost 39 per cent of the rapes were committed by friends and family members’ friends, something which cannot be prevented by the police.
The Delhi police has registered 1,54,366 FIRs till the end of September, while last year for the same period 1,40,590 FIRs filed last year.
The data also shows that four people lost their lives in road accidents each day, a total 1,143 people died on road accidents till September end. The police, however, claims these figures indicate that every case is getting registered. “These figures clearly show that Delhi police is doing truthful registration and we are registering every case which needs to be registered,” said a official.
According to a senior Delhi police official, various steps have been taken to curb crimes against women. Also most of the cases of rape, molestations and murder have been solved by the Delhi police. “There are various reasons of increase in crime but most cases of rape, murder, etc have been solved by the Delhi police,” said a senior official.
