Vicky Donor actress Yami Gautam, who will now be seen in Bala, has a message for youngsters who are conscious of their skin complexion and overall appearance.

The Fair and Lovely brand ambassador says: “Social media has only highlighted what’s already been there since ages. Fair and Lovely has been around for three decades, and its kind of ads back in the day when it was said that ‘if you don’t look like this then you will not get a good groom or job’. But I am so glad that times have changed and a conversation has started.”

Yami has been trolled for endorsing this brand, but the actress says there is more to the story. “We had a conversation with the brand that its time to change what they have been doing. There isn’t anything wrong in selling the cream, because there are tanning creams abroad. So ultimately it’s the individual’s choice if they want to look tan or fair. If you are just happy with yourself, that is the best thing. There is no prerequisite of beauty,” she opines.

The actress adds that beauty standards should not be forced upon anyone. “Beauty should be your choice, it should not be forced upon you. To market it is not a problem, but to show that being dark-skinned is akin to unhappiness is not right. Now if you see, they don’t even talk about fairness anymore they talk about glow or nikhaar. Because sadly I don’t have the power to change the name, but the brand will evolve. I am glad that the brand is taking some steps, and I am happy,” she concludes.
