India and Singapore on Tuesday decided to strengthen cooperation in countering threats from rising terrorism with Prime Minister Narendra Modi terming cross-border terrorism and increasing radicalisation as “grave challenges” that endanger the very fabric of the two countries. Visiting Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong condemned terrorism and offered condolences to the families of soldiers who were killed in the Uri terror attack, thus backing India.
In a statement, Mr Modi said, “Rising tide of terrorism, especially cross-border terrorism, and the rise of radicalisation are grave challenges to our security. They threaten the very fabric of our societies. It is my firm belief that those who believe in peace and humanity need to stand and act together against this menace. Today, we have agreed to enhance our cooperation to counter these threats, including in the domain of cyber security.”
Singapore has taken a clear position following the cancellation of the Saarc meeting in Islamabad, with the complete regional isolation of Pakistan in south Asia. The diplomatic backing of tiny Singapore for New Delhi is part of the chorus of nations supporting India.
With Singapore being a member of the South-East Asian regional grouping Asean, Prime Minister Modi — in a veiled reference to the South China Sea — also said, “Our defence and security cooperation is a key pillar of our strategic partnership. As two maritime nations, keeping the sea lanes of communication open, and respect for international legal order of seas and oceans is a shared priority.”
As is well-known, India has always supported the right to navigation in international waters along with the United States and several Asean members, some of whom have a maritime dispute with China. An international tribunal had recently dismissed Chinese claims on the South China Sea.
