A traditional Rajasthani Phad painting will adorn the wall of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence in Delhi.

The black and white painting has been created by Bhilwara-based Kalyan Joshi, a renowned Phad painter. Joshi was contacted by famous art curator Sushma K. Bahal who has been entrusted with the task of giving a new look to 7, Lok Kalyan Marg (earlier 7, Race Course Road), the official residence of the PM.

“She called up two months ago for the first time asking for a good Phad painting for the PM’s residence. She followed it up with calls to discuss details,” Mr Joshi said.

This was Mr Joshi’s first black and white creation. The 2.5X4 feet painting was created on a thick cloth using a single colour. Usually, Phad paintings contain vibrant colours.

In the painting, Mr Joshi has depicted “Krishna Leela” with miniature details from Lord Krishna’s childhood, such as milking of a cow, stealing of butter and Govardhan leela. At the centre of the picture are depicted Radha and Krishna, maharajas on the banks of Yamuna under full moon light.

Similar paintings by Mr Joshi have been showcased in art museums in the United States while research has been conducted in Germany. His works are also displayed in the offices of Planning Commission, Sanchar Bhawan and INA metro station. “This is a proud moment for me to have my painting in the PM’s house,” said Mr Joshi who has received President’s award for his work.
