For the art lover's soul
Another place that you shouldn't miss in Bengaluru is Venkatappa Art Gallery, the red-coloured art museum-cum-gallery that houses artifacts belonging to various ages, artists and places. Built in 1967 as a tribute to artist K. Venkatappa, a renowned artist of Karnataka, the museum has an antiquity gallery, painting gallery, sculpture gallery and the art gallery.
The antiquity gallery is where you can find rare artifacts from different time zones. It is, in fact, a guide to understand the various cultures and practices prevalent in society during those days. Sketches depicting some popular spots of Bengaluru are also exhibited there.
The painting gallery on the top floor has paintings depicting various styles such as Thanjavur, Bikaner, Mewar, Malwa, Ragamala, Rajput and Pahadi. It is a study material to comprehend nuances of each technique – features of objects and colour combinations. Outside the painting gallery are exhibited rare music instruments.
The sculpture gallery houses sculptures in various mediums unearthed from various spots like Chandela Dynasty and centuries. 'Varha lifting Bhudevi', 'Decorated Frieze', 'Natyaganapathi', 'Chamara Bearers', and 'Uma Maheshwara' are a few.
Then, we have the Venkatappa Art Gallery where paintings of Venkatappa and other artists like K.K. Hebbar and Rajaram are displayed. Among them, the ‘Scenes of Ooty’ by Venkatappa are a visual treat.
