Micro-needling radio frequency (MNRF) is a process in which the medical expert uses fine needles on a device to injure the skin in a controlled manner, thus signalling to the skin to heal. This healing process stimulates the collagen formation and remodelling.

The procedure is an advanced technology that combines micro-needling with radio frequency energy. Given that it is a non-surgical and minimally invasive technique, with minimal downtime and almost no discomfort or pain, MNRF has become a popular procedure to achieve results.

During the procedure, the ultra fine needles on the device and the heat energy cause a 3D stimulation of the dermis, the inner layer of the skin with supporting structures such as collagen and elastin. The above technique remodels the collagen and stimulates new collagen production, thus tightening and volumising the skin.

Given the better and quicker results, MNRF is preferred to plain micro-needling. However, experts caution that results can vary based on the device used and the knowledge and technique of the doctor doing the procedure.

The commonly treated areas with MNRF are the face, under-eye area, neck and décolletage. The procedure is widely used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, acne and chicken pox scars, mild-to-moderate skin laxity, irregular skin texture, open pores, axillary hyperhidrosis and stretch marks.

What to expect during MNRF

Anaesthesia cream is applied on the required area for about 30 minutes. The skin is then cleansed and the hand piece with a tip that has the ultra fine needles is used to complete the procedure. After the procedure is completed, an antibiotic cream and sunscreen are applied.

Depending on the severity of one’s condition, one may need three to four sessions every four to six weeks. However, it is important to note that the results are usually noticeable only after three to four months.

There are no major side effects to this procedure, although one may expect a mild discomfort after the procedure for about thirty minutes; the mild redness and swelling may last for the day. Very rarely do scabs form, but those that form fall off within a week.

Post procedure, the doctor usually advises patients to use a gentle cleanser and apply moisturiser and sunscreen regularly. They would also caution the patient to avoid makeup and sweating exercises for about three days.

It is also advised for those who have undergone the procedure to avoid people with active infections, history of scarring, patients with pacemakers and facial metal implants.
