NEW DELHI: Alleging that the Delhi police is a “puppet” of the Modi government, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday hit out at the Central government and demanded a court-monitored probe in the JNU violence, saying a “pre-judged” police inquiry has no “credibility”. The Congress also sent a fact-finding team comprising four members to probe the incident.

A masked mob armed with sticks and rods on Sunday attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, injuring at least 35 people, including JNU Students’ Union president Aishe Ghosh.

It has been alleged that the Delhi Police personnel were present outside the campus gates when students were being beaten up by the rampaging mob.

“The Delhi Police comes directly under (Union home minister Amit Shah). Its behaviour, approach and attitude so far shows it to be a puppet of Modi govt. A pre-judged police inquiry has no credibility. This needs a court-monitored independent inquiry and include conduct of the Central govt,” Mr Yechury tweeted.

A four-member fact-finding team of the Congress visited Jawaharlal Nehru University on Wednesday to probe the attack on students and faculty members.

The team comprising All India Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev, interacted with students on the issue.
