Kolkata: Slamming the Centre over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) implementation in Assam, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday expressed her shock claiming that one lakh members of the Gorkha community were excluded from the NRC list.

She wondered that even the family members of former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed were dropped.

On Sunday she tweeted, “Earlier I was not aware of the full NRC fiasco. As more and more information is coming in, we are shocked to see that names of more than 1 lakh Gorkha people have been excluded from the list. In fact, names of thousands and thousands of genuine Indians, including those of CRPF and other jawans, family members of former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, have been excluded."

The Trinamul Congress supremo added, “Government must take care that genuine Indians are not left out and justice is meted out to all of our genuine Indian brothers and sisters."

This was the second time she reacted strongly after the release of NRC list in Assam.

On Saturday Ms Banerjee had alleged, “The NRC fiasco has exposed all those who tried to take political mileage out of it. They have a lot to answer to the nation. This is what happens when an act is guided by an ulterior motive rather than the good of the society and the larger interest of the nation My heart goes out to all those, especially the large number of Bengali speaking brothers and sisters, who are made to suffer because of this botched-up process.”

The updated National Register of Citizens which identifies bona fide Indian citizens in Assam, was released on Saturday. A total of 3,30,27,661 people had applied for inclusion in the register.  Of them, 19,06,657 were excluded, a statement from the NRC State Coordinator's office said.
