Mumbai: The Kandivali police on Tuesday arrested an auto-rickshaw driver for allegedly masturbating while staring at a woman passenger. The incident came to light after the victim’s friend tweeted about her ordeal and tagged the Mumbai police. The identity of the accused has not yet been revealed.

The incident took place late on Monday after the woman hailed a rickshaw at Kandivali railway station. The woman — who was on her way to Dahanukar Wadi — alighted midway and hurriedly paid her fare when she realised what the accused had been doing.

Her friend later tweeted, “Hello @MumbaiPolice . A rickshaw driver was masturbating while looking at my friend in the rearview mirror. He picked her up today at 10.50pm from Kandivali station. As soon as she realised, she panicked and got down midway. [MH 02 (UA/VA) 5177]. He’s still roaming free out there! (sic).”

The police then tracked down the woman and recorded her statement following which they launched a manhunt for the accused. “We scanned CCTV camera footage based on the details given by the woman. The 33-year-old accused was finally traced to Hanuman Nagar slums on Akurli Road, from where he was arrested,” said an officer of Kandivali police station.

The police later verified his identity with the complainant and interrogated him after which he confessed. The police is now probing to see if he had subjected other women passengers to similar behaviour.

A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 354(A) (explicit sexual overtures), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
