A man committed suicide by jumping in front of a Metro train early on Sunday morning. The incident took place at Sakinaka Metro station, after which Metro train services were disrupted for over an hour.
This is the first time that a person has committed suicide by jumping before a running train at a Mumbai Metro station.
The Sakinaka police, which is investigating the case, said that the deceased has been identified as Udaykumar Ganeshchandra Prasad, a native of Shripurihari in Bihar’s Madhubani district. According to the police, eyewitnesses said that Prasad jumped in front of the 9.20 am Ghatkopar-bound Metro train at Sakinaka station.
The police added that they were able to determine the victim’s identity based on certain papers found in his pocket. “He did not have any documents on him which could give a clue about his family or where he stayed in the city. We have thus not been able to contact his family and ascertain other details about him,” said Avinash Dharmadhikar, senior inspector, Sakinaka police station. An investigator said that Prasad was carrying a mobile phone, but the gadget was damaged beyond repair when he jumped in front of the Metro train. “The phone is badly damaged and we have hence not been able to access any contacts contained in it or call his family or friends,” the officer said. He added that the deceased did not leave behind a suicide note, making it difficult to ascertain why he took the extreme step.
Mumbai Metro One issued a statement regarding the incident, saying, “At around 9.20 am on Sunday, a youth, who appeared to be around 25 years of age, jumped in front of a Versova-Ghatkopar train that was coming in at Sakinaka station. The station staff immediately informed the Sakinaka police, who have taken the body for identification and post-mortem. The train was evacuated and retracted from service. Services were disrupted and were running in a short loop and on a single track. Normal traffic resumed at 10.45 am.”
The police have sent the body to Rajawadi Hospital for the post-mortem, and are making an effort to trace Prasad’s friends and family.
