MMRC to build Metro-6 corridor, not MMRDA
Along with constructing the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro-3 corridor, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) will also construct the 11-km Jogeshwari-SEEPZ-Kanjurmarg Metro-6 corridor, following a recommendation by the expert committee formed by the state government to this effect.
The Metro-6 corridor was initially going to be constructed by the MMRDA, but the expert committee formed by the state government had recommended that MMRC should construct the corridor and not the MMRDA. It reasoned that as the MMRC is already constructing Metro-3 corridor, there could be duplication of work if another agency constructs it.
“It was suggested by the state government to handover the Metro 6 corridor to MMRC and we are now waiting for the updated DPR by the DMRC, as the earlier one was drafted by the MMRDA and it will be better if it is updated. We will take major decision on the alignment and also the plans about integration with Metro-3 will only be decided after the DPR is out,” said Ashwini Bhide, managing director, MMRC. The MMRC expects the updated detailed project (DPR), which is being prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), to be out by the end of January.
“The Metro-6 will start from the Western Express Highway (WEH) near SRPF ground and the planned alignment is along the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR). Metro-6 will meet the proposed Metro-3 at SEEPZ metro station. However, Metro-3 is underground and Metro-6 is an elevated corridor. We may integrate the Metro-3 and Metro-6 depending on the what are the recommendation in the DPR,” said an MMRC official.
