One of the most nail-biting ICC World Cup finals, the match between New Zealand and England saw twist and turns after every over. Although England won the World Cup, New Zeland managed to win the hearts of fans with their show of sportsmanship. Many veteran cricketers took to social media to express their dissapointment over the ICC rules. Ex cricketer Yuvraj Singh tweeted, “I don’t agree with that rule ! But rules are rules congratulations to England on finally winning the World Cup, my heart goes out for the kiwis they fought till the end. Great game an epic final !!!! #CWC19Final”

The host scored a total of 24 boundaries whereas the Blackcaps scored 14, which eventually led to the latter’s defeat. Veteran cricketer, Bishan Singh Bedi was also upset with the result. “Grossly unimaginative ICC rules help #England win World Cup..Ideally it would have been better if both Eng & NZ were declared joint winners..& shared the Cup..as underdogs #NZ did more to create such an amazing result..while #Eng were expected to win hands down..Think ICC think!” he tweeted. while Harsha Bhogle wrote, "My heart goes out to Kane Williamson and @BLACKCAPS. But congratulations for playing with dignity and class. You made a lot more friends and did your country proud."

Despite the loss, captain Kane Williamson was lauded for his captaincy as well as his contribution for the team. The player of the tournament was visibly disheartened with the result. ‘'Don't know how they won it, was it boundaries or something?” he said at the post match presentation ceremony. The top order batsmen has performed exceedingly well in the tournament, scoring 557 runs in 10 matches. He also broke the record of scoring most runs in a world cup by a captain previously held by Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene. But what took the viewers and cricketers by surprise was his calm demeanour in the face of defeat. Infact, he was applauded his adverseries and congratulated them on their  win. With his gestures, the new Zealand captain has proved that cricket is still a gentleman’s game.
