New Delhi: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met senior leaders and general secretary incharge of the poll-bound states of Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Mizoram. The Congress election committee members were also present in the meeting. The major issue that was discussed in the meeting was the internal organisation elections in these states.

The state units requested that since the Assembly elections in these states are scheduled for the end of this year the cadres are busy in preparations the internal organisation elections should be postponed. But as per the AICC schedule the internal elections in states are supposed to start in July this year.

Insiders say that internal organisation elections tend to get bitter sometimes and since the Assembly elections are just six months away this could potentially start factionalism in the state units. The Congress leadership is yet to take a call on the issue.

While issue related to the Assembly elections were also discussed at the meeting, leaders from Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, along the incharge general secretaries, have had discussions with the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi separately.

Sources indicate that the Congress will very soon be announcing the campaign committees in these poll-bound states. The Congress is in power in Himachal Pradesh.
