Appeasement at IIT

The Indian Institutes of Technology’s decision to hike their fees from Rs 90,000 to Rs 2 lakh for the upcoming academic session is disappointing. The minister for human resources development, Smriti Irani, appears to have chosen appeasement of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and the lower-income group by allowing them a full fee-waiver. But the IITs must ensure that the creamy layer among the SC/STs do not usurp this fee waiver while the those who really need it stagnate.
