Jamia, JNU students gherao Kejriwal's house

The protesters further requested everyone to maintain peace and harmony in their area.

New Delhi: Terming the ongoing violence in northeast Delhi as a genocidal attempt on Muslim community, the Jamia coordination committee along with civil societies and students on Wednesday staged a protest at Jantar Mantar. The students had also staged a protest outside the residence of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on the wee hours of Wednesday to demand action in the communal violence in northeast Delhi. The call to gherao the chief minister’s residence post midnight was given by Jamia coordination committee (JCC), which comprises students and alumni from the varsity.

Hitting out at the government and the law enforcement agencies for falling to perform their duties, the protesters said the current situation in Delhi is a pre-planned state sponsored attack on the Muslim community that has been replicated on the Gujarat model.

The protesters further requested everyone to maintain peace and harmony in their area. “We request all the concerned citizens of the country to unite and observe a protest in your respective universities, colleges and localities,” members of JCC said.

Earlier, on the wee hors of Wednesday, Delhi police dispersed the protesters which has gathered outside Mr Kejriwal’s residence. The protesters mainly consisted of students from JNU, members of the Alumni Association of Jamia Millia Islamia (AAJMI) and Jamia coordination committee (JCC).

The protesters gathered at around midnight after which police started dispersing them at around 3:30 am. The students were demanding to meet him and submit a charter of demands over violence in the capital.
