Think short-term on solid waste management: Activists to BMC

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in its affidavit on Friday presented before the a division bench of justices A S Oka and Riyaz Chagla said that several stormwater drain outfalls which drain into the Arabian sea directly.

Mumbai: Activists maintain that there is a need for more focus on short-term measures than relying completely on sewage treatment plants for sewage and waste treatment that is awaited. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in its affidavit on Friday presented before the a division bench of justices A S Oka and Riyaz Chagla said that several stormwater drain outfalls which drain into the Arabian sea directly. In suburbs and extended suburbs, open storm water drains are constructed on both sides of the road.  “The BMC should work on installing nets in the stormwater drains that trap the solid waste especially plastic and prevents waste from entering the sea,” said Stalin Dayanand, Project Director, NGO Vanashakti.
