The experiment to ban movement of heavy vehicles during the peak hours on the Expressway proved to be a success on Monday, said the police.
The flow of traffic on the expressway witnessed smooth flow as the police had halted heavy vehicles on their way from Pune to Mumbai. The difference was especially seen at the Khandala ghat section.
“More than 200 vehicles, including over-dimensional cargo, overload trucks going from Pune to Mumbai were stopped at Urse and Khusgoan toll station between 7 am and 10 am. We provided them parking space. We will now carry out the same experiment Friday evening and Saturday morning for vehicles travelling from Mumbai to Pune at Khalapur toll post,” said Amol Tambe, superintendent, Highway Safety Traffic, Pune. Gaurav Shinde, assistant police inspector, Vadagoan, highway traffic, said, “Many who stay in Pune and work in Mumbai travel towards the city Monday morning. It had been observed that the movement of heavy vehicles had been causing regular traffic congestion on the Expressway. Monday’s experiment underlined this fact.” Last week, the traffic police had to shut expressway for seven hours after a heavy vehicle broke down in the ghat section.
