Ben Stokes says he will be apologising to Kane Williamson for rest of his life

Mumbai: England's Ben Stokes grabbed all the headlines after hitting an unbeaten knock of 84 runs in the ICC World Cup 2019. Stokes' knock propelled England's run chase, ending the match on a tie. England eventually lifted their maiden World Cup trophy after emerging victorious in a thrilling super over.

However, things could have been very different for England due to an incident that happened in the final over of England's chase.

Stokes hit Trent Boult to deep mid-wicket and took off for a double but as he dived to complete the second run, Martin Guptill's throw hit his bat and raced away to the boundary for an extra four runs.

Stokes immediately put up his hands to apologize for the incident. After the match, Stokes also stated that he would be apologising to New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson for the rest of his life for the incident.

"I am pretty lost for words. All the hard work to get here and be world champions, it's an amazing feeling. Playing against New Zealand is always a good event, they are good lads. I will be apologising to Kane for the rest of my life (the overthrow for the six runs total)...It was written in the stars to happen for us," he was quoted as saying by www.nzherald.co.nz.

Stokes smashed eight runs from three balls in the Super Over to help England post 15 runs on the board. In reply, New Zealand were also able to amass 15 runs on the board. However, England clinched their maiden World Cup trophy as they hit more boundaries in the Super Over.
