A 58-year-old woman was found murdered at her flat in a residential high-rise society, Ahinsa Khand-2, in Indirapuram on Wednesday night.

The police arrested the accused early Thursday morning from Noida.

The victim, Madhur Agrawal, a resident of Shri Ram Residency Apartme-nts, was alone at home when the incident occurred as her son, Vibhor, had gone to his office in Shahdra at 2.30 pm.

“I came back from work at around 10 pm and saw that the gate was latched from the outside. After entering the house, I found my mother in a pool of blood. The whole house had been ransacked and my mother’s gold chain was missing as well,” said Vibhor.

Vibhor informed the police immediately and took his mother to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead.

“The woman was murdered by slitting the throat with a knife. Investigations revealed that one of the housekeeping staff, Deepak, was missing,” said Atul Kumar Yadav, circle officer, Indirapuram police station.

Deepak, 21, was employed by the society’s maintenance company for odd jobs. A native of Hardoi district, he was currently living in Kanavani Village.

“Acting on a tip-off, Deepak was arrested from Chijjarsi village in Noida on Thursday morning at around 5 am. He revealed that he had committed the murder at 4.30 pm on Wednesday. He was under debt of Rs 5,000 which he wanted to recover by stealing Madhur’s gold chain and bangles. However, after he committed the murder, he got cold feet and could not remove the bangles from the body,” Mr Yadav said.

The police said that Deepak entered the house on the pretext of checking an electrical wire in the house after Vibhor had left for work. He was carrying a kitchen knife and murdered Madhur. After the murder, he could not open the safe which contained valuable jewellery and fled the spot.

The accused was booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
