The city police arrested a 20-year-old engineering student on Sunday on charge of abetment to suicide in connection with the suicide case of Priya, a 17-year-old girl who jumped off from Cross River Mall in East Delhi.

The police said that the accused was identified as Rinku Kumar, a native of Sirohi district of Rajasthan. He was pursuing civil engineering. He was arrested from Maharajpur bus station where he had gone to meet one of his friends.

During interrogation, the accused told that he and Priya had met on Facebook around two years ago. They started chatting and exchanged their phone number. After chatting on WhatsApp for seven months, they finally decided to meet. He insisted Priya to come to Jaipur, but she refused his proposal and asked him to visit her in Ghaziabad. He came to Ghaziabad and they met at a mall in Kaushambi where they spent around two hours together and he retur-ned to Jaipur.

They two remained in touch through social media applications.

Priya’s brother and father, after getting to know about their relation, intervened and they lodged a police complaint. Fumed over her for avoiding him, he sent her photos to all of her relatives as he already had all their numbers. “The accused has been booked on charges of abetting the teenager’s suicide under IPC Section 306. We are also investigating the role of two other friends of the accused who have helped him in the case,” said the senior official.
