Guwahati: In what has come as shocker to many, an Assam Congress legislator on Tuesday slit his palm with a shaving blade at the entrance of the Assembly to write anti-government slogan with his blood.

The Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi who is known for different protest within and outside the party forum on Tuesday staged a walk out from the state Assembly and sat in front of the entrance of the Assembly and slit open his left palm with a blade.

He used the blood to write slogan on a huge placard that he was carrying.

The slogan that was written in Assamese read that Assamese people’s sentiments would not be allowed to be sold, in a direct reference to the Centre’s move to amend the Citizenship Act of 1955 in order to give citizenship to non-Muslims from neighboring countries.

Mr Kurmi who wrote the slogan by his blood in front of television cameras that was streaming the incident live also demanded revival of two paper mills of Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd. Whose liquidation has been ordered by the Centre recently.

He also alleged that the BJP-led government was planning to hand over the Namrup fertilizer factory and a tea garden to private companies.

Assam has witnessed strong protests against the privatisation move, with most demanding the government to revive the PSUs.

“I took this step as the government has neglected the peaceful protest. Today’s protest should be considered as a message that Assam would witness bloody protests in the days to come if the government does not listen to the peaceful protests and relent,” he said.
