New Delhi: Tajikistan is considering making the system of issuing of visas easier, Tajik ambassador Sulton Rahimzoda said on Tuesday, while seeking to further boost ties with India. In an interaction with this newspaper, the Tajik envoy said there was a lot of “untapped potential” in trade ties between the two countries. “We are looking to increase annual trade with India much beyond the current $100 million. This is just not sufficient,” the Tajik envoy said. “There is cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector, industry, tourism, mining and medical tourism. For trade ties to be further strengthened, direct air-connectivity between the two countries is extremely important,” Mr Rahimzoda said. He added that his country was “considering making the issue of visas more easy” for a “simplified visa system”.

The Tajik ambassador was speaking at an event on Tuesday to mark the launch of direct flights on December 1 by Tajik private airline Somon Air between New Delhi and Dushanbe. In addition to New Delhi, the private carrier is also planning to launch flights from Dushanbe to Goa by 2021.
