Lucknow: The clamour for publicity between two BJP leaders led to a public brawl in Sitapur on Saturday evening.

An event organised to distribute blankets to the poor took an ugly turn when supporters of BJP MP Rekha Verma clashed with supporters of the local BJP MLA Shashank Trivedi, each accusing the other of trying to hog the limelight on the occasion.

Both the groups were apparently keen to get photographed at the event.

Ms Verma was upset when the BJP MLA arrived at the event with his supporters. “You should learn to stay in your limits,” she reportedly told the MLA.

Their scuffle, captured on a mobile phone, took place in the presence of district officials, including the police. Ms Verma can be seen slapping a man dressed in khaki in the video clip. She is also seen showing her slipper to the BJP MLA and his supporters. The Sitapur district magistrate and police chief took both the legislators into a room, where they reportedly pacified them.

Later, both the legislators switched off their mobile phone and were unavailable for comment.

Ms Verma gave a complaint to the police against the BJP MLA, but later withdrew it on the intervention of senior leaders.

About half-a-dozen persons from both sides have been injured in the incident.

Ms Verma is a first-time legislator. In 2014, she was given the BJP ticket from Dhaurhara constituency after the death of her husband. She had defeated former minister Jitin Prasada of the Congress. Shashank Trivedi is also a first time MLA from the BJP.
