To fight pollution, SC bans sale of crackers in Delhi
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday ordered a ban on sale of firecrackers in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) due to the pollution caused by these crackers.
According to reports, the court said that no fresh licenses for selling of firecrackers will be given, and existing licenses will be suspended.
The court had earlier indicated it may take such a step, in an effort to control the pollution in the region, which rose to dangerous levels in the days following Diwali.
The court was hearing petitions for banning fire crackers in NCR.
The apex court asked Central Pollution Control Board to file a reply within 3 months regarding the harmful effects of fire crackers.
The ban on firecrackers comes into force from Thursday itself, until any further order or hearing of the Supreme Court.
Environmentalists had earlier sought apex court intervention in passing orders for ban on sale of firecrackers due to increasing levels of pollution in the city.
