A 6.8-kg baby girl born at the district hospital in Hassan, Karnataka, has set a new record in the country for the heaviest newborn, beating the previous national record of a baby weighing 5.7 kg at birth, according to doctors here.

The baby was born on Monday to Arun, 23, and Nandini, 19, of Muddanahalli in Kattaya hobli, Hassan taluk. Normally, a newborn weighs between 2.5 kgs to 3.5 kg and in rare cases about 4 kg. The weight of the baby has therefore surprised the doctors at the hospital, who now want to do research into what could have led to it.

Everything seemed as usual when Arun drove his wife Nandini to admit her to the District Hospital on Monday evening. But soon the hospital was buzzing with the news of an unusually heavy newborn as the little girl was delivered through cesarean section at around 6.15 pm the same evening.

She weighed about 7 kg during scanning of her mother’s womb and after birth weighed 6.82 kg, according to doctors at the hospital.

“The baby’s weight has fallen by about 400 grams now. Both mother and daughter are doing fine at the hospital,” District Surgeon and Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Shankar told the Deccan Chronicle on Thursday, explaining any study of the phenomenon would involve examination of the baby’s hormones, metabolism and others factors. According to him a baby weighing about 10 kgs at birth holds the world record. While Arun was happy to know that his baby girl has set a record for being the heaviest at birth in the country, Nandini’s mother, Manjula was relieved that it was not a cause for worry and both mother and child were doing well.
