The government has given a second extension of one-year to National Investigation Agency chief Sharad Kumar.

The government has given a second extension of one-year to National Investigation Agency chief Sharad Kumar. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has cleared the proposal for “re-employment” of Mr Kumar as the director-general of the NIA for a period of one year “beyond the end of previous one year”.’

Mr Kumar is a senior IPS officer and belongs to the 1979 batch of the Haryana cadre and was appointed as DG NIA on July 30, 2013. Sources said Mr Kumar was given another extension as the NIA is in the process of finalising investigations into some sensitive cases that include the attack on Pathankot Air Force base, terror strikes in parts of Kashmir Valley, Burdwan and Samjhauta blast cases.

Mr Kumar received several outstanding reports in addition to the President’s police medals for meritorious and distinguished services in the year 1996 and 2004 respectively.
