A middle-aged woman and her twin sons were found murdered under mysterious circumstances at Palm Avenue in Karaya on Saturday morning. The murder took place in a flat of a building opposite to the residence of former CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. The victims were identified as Jessica Fonseka (42) and her 16-year-old twin sons — Darren and Joshua — Class 9 students. Jessica’s husband Neil Fonseka (49), an interior decorator, was also found lying in the house in critical condition. The murder came to light after Jessica’s sister Shabana went to their flat at around 6.30 am.

Getting no response despite repeated knocks, she called up the couple’s daughter, Samantha, sleeping with her 85-year-old grand-mother in a room adjoining the one where Neil, Jessica, Darren and Joshua went to sleep after returning from a party at a club at Park Street. Samantha knocked the common door between the two rooms. As Neil opened it she screamed in panic after finding injuries on her father and alerted the neighbours who rushed to the flat. The bodies of Jessica, Darren and Joshua were found in a pool of blood. Neil was admitted to a nursing home where he recorded his statement in writing. Joint commissioner of police Debashish Boral said, “According to Neil, he woke up at 4.30 am and had a quarrel with Jessica who suddenly picked up a kitchen knife and slit the throats of their two sons who were sleeping. She then attacked him. Neil said he turned furious and hit Jessica with the same dumbbell on her head. He also cut her throat with another knife, before slitting his wrist. Neil also admitted that he entered into an affair with a woman three years ago,” Mr Boral added.

The police, however, found gaps in Neil’s statement and learnt Jessica was aware of Neil’s extra-marital affair and often quarrelled with him over it.

Three blood soaked kitchen knives and the dumbbell were seized. Samantha, her grand-mother and Shabana were questioned by the police. But they claimed of not having any clue. A case on murder charge was initiated at the Karaya police station.
