Education is a very crucial and inalienable factor for building a society and India has a long way to go when it comes to ensuring education for everyone. Even more crucial is ensuring education for girls in order to change the position of women in India.

While the administration is introducing policies and launching campaigns with a view to promote education for girls, there still seems to be a need for the society to come out and take up the cause, something Sumeet Paringe (26) and his childhood friend Prisiliya Madan (22) are doing.

The duo has set out on a bicycle journey from Kanya Kumari in Kerala to Khardung La Pass, which is one of the northernmost points in India. They are doing it on bicycles made from bamboo and want to raise Rs 50 lakhs for education of underprivileged girls.

They started off on the 70 day journey on July 14 and have already reached Delhi after 41 days, as they have managed to raise Rs 28 lakh in their quest to ensure education for 1500 girls.

They said that with frames made of bamboo instead of aluminium or carbon fibre, the cycles can withstand more pressure and also make for a more relaxing ride. They will take a two day break before setting out to the Himalayas.

The duo which cycles from sunrise to sunset every day, has found that Indian cities are not very friendly and inclusive as far as cyclists go.

They are raising money through the campaign ‘Cyclists For Change’ on crowdfunding platform fueladream.com.
