10,000 Delhiites to perform yoga with Naidu, Kejriwal

Many diplomats to participate in Nehru Park; CP closed for vehicular traffic till June 21.

New Delhi: Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, Delhi lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal, and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal are expected to do yoga in the city with around 10,000 Delhiites on the International Yoga Day (IYD) on June 21.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will be organising the Delhi edition of the IYD at Connaught Place in its six radials and inner circles, and at the city’s three gardens — Lodhi Garden, Nehru Park, Talkatora Garden — and Children’s Park at India Gate.

“About 10,000 participants will be performing the common Yoga Protocol. The programme will start at 6 am and Yoga Protocol by the participants will go on from 7 am to 7.45 am,” said NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar.

According to Mr Kumar, Mr Naidu will be the chief guest, while sports minister Vijay Goel; Mr Baijal; Mr Kejriwal and Lok Sabha member from New Delhi, Meenakashi Lekhi, will also attend the event. The diplomats of various countries would be participating in the programme at Nehru Park.

Volunteers from organisations like Patanjali Yoga Peetha, Art of Living, Maa Shakti, Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vidyalaya, Gayatri Pariwar, Morarji Desai and National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), along with the Delhi police, the NDMC, the CISF, the CRPF, the BSF, the ITBP, the Walking Volunteers, VVIPs, VIPs, and the general public would perform yoga on the occasion. “The vehicular traffic in Connaught Place’s inner circle will be closed from 11 pm till 11.30 am between June 19 and June 21 for preparations and arrangements and to organise the event. Shops and pedestrian traffic will remain open, but parking lots in the inner circle will be available,” added Mr Kumar.

In order to promote yoga, Mr Kumar said that the NDMC has decided to continue yoga programme on regular basis, at least six days in a week in the morning hours at Lodhi Garden, Nehru Park, and Talkatora Garden in collaboration with the Art of Living, Patanjali Yoga Peeth, and MDNIY.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call, the UN General Assembly had in December 2014, declared that June 21 would be observed as International Yoga Day.

This year, Lucknow will be hosting the main event in which Mr Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath will be participating along with 55,000 people.

The first Yoga Day celebration in the country was organised at the Rajpath in New Delhi on June 21, 2015, in which representatives of 191 countries had participated.
