Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday  demanded  a probe by a Supreme Court judge into the assets bought by the BJP just months before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of demonetisation.

Participating in a  discussion on demonetisation in the state Assembly, Ms Banerjee also  appealed to all political parties barring the BJP to unite against Narendra Modi government’s  move.

She claimed to have reports and proof of BJP’s purchase of huge tracts of land and depositing of lumpsum account in bank accounts just before the scrapping of notes on November 8. “Why did they buy such huge tracts of land just ahead of demonetisation? Lands have been purchased in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and in Bengal too. This is a big, big scam that needs to be unearthed. . We demand an investigation by the Chief Justice or an acting Judge of the Supreme Court. ,” Ms Banerjee said.

The chief minister said that in Bengal, the BJP had purchased  lands at Baruipur, Dum Dum and Belgharia Expressway. A Trinamul Congress leader later said that the 17 cottah land purchased near Belgharia Expressway is valued at Rs 4.5 crore.

“I don’t support black money. We all are against black money. But this decision of demonetisation is without any proper planning. It is a man-made disaster,” Ms Banerjee said. Launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said she apprehensive that “Modi Babu who has come as a tea seller will loot the entire nation and will go to a foreign country”.

“He may have come to power as a ‘chaiwala’ but will leave as a ‘feriwala’ after looting the entire nation,” Ms Banerjee said.

Hitting out at Prime Minister’s foreign visits she said that  Modiji has stopped taking media contingent with him during his trips abroad.

“Why has he stopped taking the media with him in stark difference to the  earlier Prime Ministers? Who are those who accompany him during such trips? What is he trying to hide? she questioned.

The chief minister also raised her voice about Narendra Modi’s appeal for using debit and credit cards. “Are these cards fullproof? Twenty-nine lakh debit cards have been hacked recently. In Bengal the figure is 2.5 lakhs. What is the guarantee that our money will not be siphoned off?” the chief minister asked, criticising the step.
