Kolkata: A college student was arrested by the police after she was caught supplying drugs to her lover lodged at the Dum Dum Central Jail in northern outskirts of the city.

Susmita Malakar (21), the accused, was granted bail by the court later. She is a resident of Nopara in Barasat of North 24 Parganas.

Susmita is also a second-year-student of Sanskrit (Hons) at Acharya Prafulla Chandra College at Madhyamgram.

On Tuesday afternoon she went to visit her lover: Bhagirath Malakar of Amdanga who has been lodged at the prison for a long time.

The youth is accused in six cases including murder, dacoity and snatching. Susmita introduced herself as a relative of Bhagirath.

While entering the prison the police personnel, however, found she was carrying a small countainer which was seized immediately.

Opening the container the cops were, however stunned to find heroin of around 290 gms in it. Susmita was detained and was taken to Dum Dum police station.

She was later arrested. During interrogation Susmita told the police that she was going to deliver it to Bhagirath whom she comes to meet twice a week.

The police however suspect that there is someone else behind her who supplies the drug through her to Bhagirath who later distributes it among other inmates at a high price.

On Wednesday Susmita was produced at the Barrackpore Court which granted her bail. Her father Sanjoy Malakar said, “My daughter left home at around 10 am on Tuesday on the pretext of going to the college. She had told me she would return home after attending private tution.”

He added, “I however failed to contact her since afternoon. At night when I was going to lodge a missing diary, I got a call from the Dum Dum police station and came to know about her arrest.”

My daugther is not bad. She may have been falsely implicated. I also do not know who Bhagirath is.”
