Officials hit road to supervise works
Mumbai: It was a different Sunday for the officials of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Instead of cooling their heels at home on weekly off, they were seen making site visits of the areas in their jurisdiction under the hot sun. Almost all senior civic officials had hit the roads to ensure that BMC’s pre-monsoon preparation works on roads are completed.
According to civic officials, the BMC has undertaken road and pavement works at various places in the city. In addition to this, trench-filling works are also going on at many places. During these works, there was a possibility of stuff like barricades, debris, silt lying on roads, which is likely to cause inconvenience to people during monsoon.
In the monthly review meeting held on Saturday, civic chief Ajoy Mehta had directed all deputy and assistant commissioners to cancel their weekly off and make site visits in their respective wards on Sunday. He had threatened to make a surprise visit at some of the areas on Tuesday.
Accordingly, all senior officials visited sites in their respective areas to supervise road clearing works and remove obstacles on roads.
“The ward officers have been informed that all the works need to be completed by Monday. On Tuesday, the civic chief would be inspecting parts of the city to check whether these works have been finished,” said a senior civic official.
Meanwhile, the civic officials have also been asked to take action against illegal hawkers, unauthorised food stalls and juice centres during the monsoon.
“Mr Mehta has also directed to complete BMC’s all pre-monsoon preparation works across the city at the earliest. It has been decided to review these works and preventive measures taken by the BMC regularly during monsoon and make site visits wherever necessary,” said a civic official.
