Mumbai: Maharashtra’s Legal Metrology Organisation’s Inspector General  Amitabh Gupta has said that in the absence of any law banning dual MRPs, wherein it has been observed that certain  products are sold at higher rates at malls and airports, the department is relying upon the Centre-amended rules governing its functioning to warn companies against selling products with two MRPs from January 2018.

"If there is no law banning dual MRPs, there is no law approving them as well and so companies will have to abide by the amended rules banning dual MRPs from January 2018," he said. The department has also begun a WhatsApp number 9869691666 to receive complaints from lay consumers against products/companies charging more than the MRP rates or charging more in the name of the newly-enforced GST.”

“The dual pricing continues despite several orders by the consumer courts that have made it clear that there cannot be two MRPs for the same product. There is no such rule or law is available in India right now. This is a serious issue and somewhere there should be rules. Although we have given them time to fix MRP of their product till January 2018, but today also its not allowed to have two MRP for one product and we will take action against such retailer and company if we found anything like this,” added Gupta.
