Civic body sets up 11 vermi-composting units

According to civic officials, under the Swacch Mumbai Abhiyan, vermi-composting plants have been set up at 10 municipal offices.

Mumbai: In a bid to promote waste segregation and disposal at its source, the BMC has set up vermi-composting units at 11 places including its ward offices and near Mantralaya. With the construction of another six units in the final stage, these plants will treat a total 3,000 kg of wet waste into compost.

According to civic officials, under the Swacch Mumbai Abhiyan, vermi-composting plants have been set up at 10 municipal offices. In addition to this, vermi-composting has also been started in the premises of Mahila Vikas Sanstha near Mantralaya. At these 11 places, 2,400 kg of wet waste is being treated to produce compost. At the remaining six places, 600 kg of wet waste will be treated.

Among municipal properties, composting units have been set up at Cooper Hospital; Byculla Zoo; offices in R-Central, P-North, P-South and K-East wards; and Vanvihar Udyan, Borivali etc. The construction of vermi-composting units has reached the final stage at Sion Hospital, Nair Hospital and offices in M-West, S and H-East wards.

Vijay Balamwar, deputy municipal commissioner (solid waste management) said, “Any society willing to set up a vermi-composting plant on its premises should contact civic officials. In the city area, they can contact Vinayak Bhat (9004445244), whereas in the eastern and western suburbs, they can approach Sunil Sardar (9833539023) and Pomsingh Chavan (7045950797), respectively.
