Mumbai: To promote Miyawaki plantation in Mumbai to increase the city’s green cover, around 24,801 trees have been planted across various wards of the city, according to the Brihan-Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The initiative aims at creating urban forests within Mumbai by planting several plant species at one site (Miyawaki method) to increase denser green spaces.

According to the Brih-anmumbai Municipal Corporation data, various civic gardens, recreation grounds and playgrounds, have seen plantation of around 6,000 trees in the open spaces within two months. The plantation drive on various sites began on July 15 this year. Apart from this, around 3,000 trees were planted by adopting Miyawaki method at Colaba woods garden in A-ward along with plantation of 1,800 saplings a 3,000 square foot open space in G/south ward.

Around, 14,000 saplings have been planted near middle Vaitarna dam. The N ward, including Ghatkopar, which is one of the greenest wards of the city also saw plantation of 1,152 trees.

The BMC has stated that native species like taman, bahava, karanj, neem and bakul with a height of six feet and above will be planted.

“The Miyawaki technique helps in growing 30 times denser forest than the usual plantation. Since we are aiming at natural areas, the forest will grow itself with percolation of rain water,” said a civic body official.
