Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday appealed to the voters to vote back the Devendra Fadnavis-led government with a stronger mandate so that it can also take bold steps for the sake of Maharashtra.

“You all have witnessed how the government is able to work when people give a strong mandate. We were able to take tough decisions riding on the mandate given by the people,” he said while referring to the abrogation of Article 370 in August.

Launching the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign for the Assembly election at Nashik, Mr Modi said that Mr Fadnavis was able to provide a stable government in Maharashtra despite the BJP failing to get to a majority in 2014.

“Mr Fadnavis has given detailed accounts of the work done by his government in the last five years work through the Maha Janadesh Yatra. There is a conducive atmosphere for investments. The farmers can also avail of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojna (PMKY). `1500 crore has already been credited to the farmers of Maharashtra,” the prime minister added.

Mr Modi praised Mr Fadnavis’ flagship water conservation programme ‘Jalyukta Shivar’ and added that 17,000 villages have turned ‘drought-free’ in the last five years.

The Prime Minister slammed the previous Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and Maharashtra, alleging that the Indian Army in 2009 had demanded the government to purchase 1.46 lakh bulletproof jackets, but not a single jacket was procured.

He said that the process of purchasing bulletproof jackets began in 2014 after the BJP formed the government at the Centre.

“Today, we are manufacturing our own bulletproof jackets and are being exported to over 100 countries,” he said.

“Two mighty helicopters have recently been inducted. Very soon, Rafale fighter jets will join the Indian Air Force (IAF). We have taken the long-pending decision to have a chief of defence staff for better co-ordination between the three forces,” the Prime Minister added.
