Mumbai: An accident at Dive Ghat killed the 17th descendant of Sant Namdev, and another devotee, while a third devotee continues to be critical. Nearly 15 war-karis (pilgrims) suffered injuries in the accident.

Around 1,500 warkaris   visited Pandharpur on the 750th birth anniversary of Sant Namdev. Sant Namdev hailed from the tailor community and has followers across the world.

His writings were also recognized by the gurus of Sikhism and are included in the holy book of Sikhism, the Sri Guru Granth Saheb.

After attending the Kartiki Ekadashi and Jayanti (birthday celebration) of Sant Namdev at Pandharpur, they were returning to Alandi near Pune when the accident took place with the Namdev Maharaj Palkhi Sohala (procession of Sant Namdev’s followers carrying palkhi).

The warkaris were crossing the Dive Ghat to reach Saswad (Pune) for their next halt when a JCB rammed into them, crushing two to death on the spot and injuring several others. In the accident Sopan Maharaj Namdas (36), the 17th descendant of Sant Namdev, died on the spot. One more warkari Atul Alashi (24) died in the mishap.

Apart from these two, 26 other warkaris were injured and are admitted to Noble Hospital. Of the injured, Vishnu Hulwar (35) and Shubham Aware (23) are in a critical condition in the ICU of the hospital. While Mr Hulwar sustained head and chest injuries, Mr Aware had six ribs fractured in the accident. Meanwhile, BJP leader and MLA from Kothrud constituency Chandrakant Patil visited the injured warkaris in hospital.
