Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished 17 licensed stalls on Linking Road in Bandra on Thursday for violating licence terms and
conditions.

The civic body also revoked their licences before taking action against them.

According to civic officials, the corporation also demolished one stall at Hill Road during the drive. The stall holders were given permits for selling various goods like garments, shoes and cutlery goods. However, they were found violating the licence conditions.

“We found one stall holder, who had two restaurants and eating houses in his name on the same road. The licenses were allotted to people who are having no other source of livelihood. However, despite owning restaurants, he was found to be running the stall as a vendor. His licence has been revoked,” said Sharad Ughade, assistant commissioner of H-West ward.

“The stallholders were issued an inspection report followed by a show cause notice for violating the terms and conditions. However, as they took no measures to correct the violations, we first revoked their licenses and demolished their stalls. The footpaths on these roads have been are now decongested, which will allow pedestrians to move freely,” Mr Ughade added.

The municipal corporation has also asked the power company concerned to discontinue electricity connections of these stalls.

This is the second major demolition drive civic body has undertaken in a week against licensed stalls for violating terms and conditions. On June 16, the civic body had razed 11 stalls, including popular eating stalls like Wraps & Rolls and Punjab Sind in Breach Candy area.

Civic activists have welcomed the civic boy’s action saying that it would benefit the local residents and pedestrians. Anil Joseph from the Perry Road Residents Association said, “Though these stalls were authorised, they had encroached upon a lot of nearby space causing inconvenience to people. The BMC has done a right thing by taking
action against them.”
