Mumbai: The restored Shiraz: A Romance of India, a 1928 silent film based on the historical romance of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal narrated from the view point of Shiraz, the brother of Mumtaz, who also contributed to the design of Taj Mahal after her death will be screened in November.
The British Film Institute (BFI) that holds the original negative material of Shiraz in their archives restored the film. The film is scheduled to be displayed in Hyderabad, Kolkata, New Delhi and Mumbai by the British Council and the BFI as part of the UK/India 2017 Year of Culture events.
According to a release by the British Council, following the 61st BFI London Film Festival world premiere of the restored Shiraz: A Romance of India, the film will be screened in India as part of a year-long celebration of the long-standing relationship between India and the UK. The celebration includes an extensive eight-month programme of classic and contemporary Indian Cinema at BFI Southbank.
Franz Osten directed the film on a script written by William Burton, which was based on a play by Niranjan Pal. A new live score performed by Anoushka Shankar will preclude the film screening, the release adds.
