NASHIK: The Nashik Revenue Division, which includes North Maharashtra, revealed shocking results in the five districts of Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon, Nandurbar and Ahmednagar.

Among the top upsets were two-time MLA Pankaj Bhujbal, son of former deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal, from Nandgaon constituency, Sena MLA Yogesh Gholap, son of former minister Baban Gholap from Nashik Road-Devlali constituency and BJP’s Rohini Khadse, daughter of former minister Eknathrao Khadse from Muktainagar constituency.

Human rights lawyer and social worker, Advocate Ranjana Pagar Gavande, said that the voters dismissed nearly all those who switched to BJP in Ahmednagar. Out of the 12 Assembly seats, BJP could muster only two seats, while NCP and Congress bagged the rest.

“The voters proved that the media, which had painted a rosy picture for the BJP, was wrong. We are happy that democracy has survived – as it needs a strong Opposition. The credit goes to NCP chief Sharad Pawar, who battled his age and cancer, and roused the people through sheer will power.

“Ahmednagar verdict shows that no party can afford to take its voters for granted,” she further said.

Former social welfare minister Baban Gholap had continued to win Nashik Road-Devlali Assembly constituency —considered to be one of the strongest fortresses of the Shiv Sena — since 1989. During the 2014 elections, he was debarred from contesting and propped up his son Yogesh Gholap, who was the present sitting MLA. As this seat belonged to the Sena, BJP corporator Saroj Babulal Ahire could not get a ticket so she contested the elections on NCP ticket and won with a margin of 41,702 votes.

NCP district president, Advocate Ravindra Pagar, said the party won six seats in Nashik district and increased the NCP’s tally by two seats. “We accept the verdict with humility. The verdict shows that the people have accepted NCP more than the ruling BJP-Sena,” Mr Pagar said.
