‘Surge in social media crimes against women’

Young women, are increasingly becoming victims of cyber-bullying, driven, as elsewhere, by the proliferation of smartphones.

In 2017, 652 similar such crimes against women were reported with 449 through Facebook and WhatsApp, 21 through email, and 182 through other media.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra cybercrime cell has noted a surge in social media crimes against women. As per data shared by the Maharashtra Cyber Security Cell, in 2016, 425 crimes against women were reported in terms of transmission of sexually explicit acts. Of the 425, 265 were through Facebook and WhatsApp, 25 through email, and 135 through other media.

In 2017, 652 similar such crimes against women were reported with 449 through Facebook and WhatsApp, 21 through email, and 182 through other media. From January 2018 to May 2018, 385 such crimes against women were reported with 288 through Facebook and WhatsApp, 14 through email, and 83 through other media.
