A partial bandh was observed on Sunday at Satana tehsil town after a call given by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to protest the alleged beating up of some NCP leaders by the police on Friday.
The party also undertook a silent morcha against the police action.
Ex-MLA Sanjay Chavan, Satana municipal council ex-president Vijayraj Wagh and 12 NCP activists were allegedly beaten up by the police and NCP alleged that false cases were filed against the party workers.
A few vehicles in the area were torched in the meele.
Acting swiftly, Additional SP Sunil Kadasne sent inspector P.T. Patil on strict leave while NCP activists have filed cross complaints against the police and demanded the removal of cases of rioting against them.
The incident occurred on Friday night at Satana tehsil town of Nashik.
NCP district president Ravindra Pagar has demanded a CID inquiry and suspension of Mr Patil.
He also alleged that Mr Patil was against NCP from the start and was always targeting NCP activists.
According to sources, Mr Wagh and others were sitting in front of their hotel at 11.30 pm on April 8, when the police went to the spot and asked them to close down.
Mr Wagh and a senior leader argued with the police stating that they were not committing any crime. Following this, the police took Mr Wagh and others to the police station.
Shortly after this, more NCP activists reached the police station and began arguing, forcing Mr Patil to call for more police and SRP (State Reserve Police).
When the SRP arrived, Mr Patil allegedly gave orders for lathi charge, in which the NCP office bearers were beaten, NCP sources said.
Mr Wagh said he and his activists had no hand in torching and smashing of vehicles and demanded an inquiry to ascertain the facts.
Mr Wagh also claimed Mr Patil was angry with him because he had complained against the officer to the SP, minister of state for home Ram Shinde and guardian minister.
