Much has been written about the Asian and European ‘Spice for Textile’ trade especially to Southeast Asia and the Western world during the 17th-18th centuries, but little is known about their production centres on Gujarat and Coromandel coasts, and how they made their way to Southeast Asia. In a lecture organised by Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Dr. Gauri Krishnan will share historic significance and artistic lineage of some of these treasured cloths held in major museum collections and her own curatorial encounter with one in the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore. She has authored and edited many books and articles on Indian architecture, sculpture, textile, dance and modern art. She is also the recipient of Singapore government’s Commendation Medal and Public Administration Medal (Bronze) for her contribution to the arts and heritage sector.
