From a YouTube sensation in 2012 to a household name today, Kanika Kapoor has come a long way. However, she still says that she never thought Baby Doll would be so successful. “Living in London, for years I used to follow everybody in the music industry here. However, I never thought I would be here one day and have people following me,” she explains.
“Every song I sang including Lovely, Chitiyan Kalaiyan or Kamlee became huge chartbusters. I feel blessed,” says the songstress with a smile.
Having trained in classical music for over 12 years, she continues to follow the lessons imparted to her by her guru, late Pandit Ganesh Prasad Mishra. Talking about him, the singer recalls, “My guruji always told me, ‘Never sing like others, stay real.’ That teaching has stuck with me even now and continues to inspire me for all my future projects.”
She adds, “I feel that I have no competition. I’m someone who is usually happy for other people be it my peers or competitors. I don’t feel jealous about anyone’s success. I wish everyone well because I am content with my own self.”
Kanika’s future project include songs for two upcoming Bollywood movies — Shahid Kapoor starrer Udta Punjab and Do Lafzon Ki Kahani staring Randeep Hooda and Kajal Aggarwal. The singer informs, “I have one song in each of these movies and both are quite different from the kind of songs people usually associate me with. While the song in Udta Punjab has an earthy vibe, the one in Do Lafzon Ki Kahani is Sufi and soothing.”
Blessed with great looks, it’s not surprising that Kanika has been receiving a lot of movie offers. “I’m open to movie offers. But I want to weigh my options and choose a film that is special and has a significant role suitable for me,” she concludes.
