Amazon to open largest fulfilment centre in Hyderabad

Mumbai: Amazon, the US-based global e-commerce giant, will open its largest fulfilment centre in India in Hyderabad, a report in The Times of India said. The upcoming warehouse will be spread over an area of 400,000 square feet and will have a storage capacity of 2.1 millon cubic feet. The company will unveil the facility at GMR Hyderabad City Airport on Saturday.

Besides, the e-commerce giant also has plans to start in Hyderabad a technology development centre which will be largest such unit outside its headquarters in Seattle, the report adds. Amazon's latest offerings for Hyderabad bears testimony to the fact that Hyderabad is fast growing into a logistics hub of India, which will culminate into generation of hundreds of new jobs.

Amazon had came to Indian e-commerce market in the year 2013 in June. The company has since then rapidly expanded its business in the country by adding new warehouses. It now has 41 FCs across 13 states with a total storage capacity of 13 million cubic feet, the report said.

Back in June 2013 when Amazon came to India, it had only one fulfilment centre in Bhiwandi near Mumbai in Maharashtra. From there, it has added 41 centres and from 100 sellers in two categories to 2.25 lakh sellers in just four years, the report said.

Company officials said fulfilment centre coming in Hyderabad will have at least 1,000 people working in it at any given point of time. "The three-storeyed facility has 51 loading and unloading docks that can handle around 1,000 trucks per day 69 km of fire hydrant piping, more than 500 km of five types of cables, over 15,000 fire sprinklers and a 1.6-km long conveyor belt to move packages," TOI report said.
