Skoda Rapid Rider launched at Rs 6.99 lakh

Skoda has launched a more affordable variant of its entry-level sedan - the Rapid- to make it more accessible to customers. Called the Rapid Rider, the new variant is priced at Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom India). This makes it around a lakh cheaper than the base petrol Active variant on which it is based. It will only be available with the petrol engine. The Rapid Rider Edition is offered in two colours -- Carbon Steel and Candy White.

The special edition model comes with a host of cosmetic updates to make it more appealing. On the outside, the Rider Edition features a black finish on the grille and B-pillar, black colour body graphics on the doors and a black colour trunk lip garnish. Changes on the interiors are limited to a scuff plate with ‘Rapid’ inscription.

The features list on the Rider Edition remains the same as the Active variant it is based on. Hence, it still sports goodies like a 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, remote central locking, front and rear power windows, front and rear armrest, manual air conditioner and electrically adjustable ORVMs.

It also comes with safety features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, seatbelt reminder, rough road package and rear parking sensors as standard.

The Rapid Rider Edition can only be had with the 1.6-litre MPI petrol unit that churns out 105PS and 153Nm. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and returns 15.41kmpl (claimed). The 1.5-litre TDI that churns out 110PS and 250Nm is not available with the new special edition.

The Rapid Rider Edition can also be had with Skoda Shield Plus as standard for complete peace of mind. Claiming to offer six years of hassle free ownership, this includes motor insurance, 24X7 roadside assistance and an extended warranty.

The Skoda Rapid rivals the Volkswagen Vento, Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. But thanks to the attractive price of the special edition sedan, it aims to eat into the market share of popular compact sedans like the Ford Aspire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent as well as the Maruti Suzuki Dzire.
