Mumbai: As the December 31 deadline for linking Aadhaar with bank accounts draws nearer, the Unique ID Authority of India (UIDAI) has directed all banks to set up Aadhaar enrolment positively by September 30.

According to a report by the Economic Times, banks are required to have one enrolment centre for every 10 branches they run.

UIDAI, the nodal agency handling Aadhaar said a penalty of Rs 20,000 per month will be imposed for every single centre banks fail to open within the deadline.

Earlier, UIDAI had asked banks to set up Aadhaar enrolment centres and update them by August 30. Banks, had however, urged that they would require more time citing reasons such as getting biometric devices and identifying authorised agencies.

The government has mandated the linking of Aadhaar with bank accounts by December 31, 2017, failing which bank accounts will be declared inoperable.
