Chennai: Having dropped 12 spots, Mumbai became 67th most expensive city in the world for expatriates in 2019. However, it continued to be India's most expensive city and one among the top 20 most expensive cities in Asia. All the top Indian cities became less expensive this year mainly due to lower inflation.

Mumbai was ranked 55 among the most expensive cities in 2018. It became less expensive in 2019 after the prices of surveyed basket of goods in the city rose at a relatively slower rate of inflation at 1.76 per cent. Costs of items such as eating out showed a drop-in price. Residential housing costs however remained among the most expensive in the world, as per the findings of global consultancy Mercer.

Factors, including currency fluctuations, cost of inflation for goods and services and volatility in accommodation prices, contribute to the overall cost of expatriate packages for employees on international assignments.

New Delhi saw a drop of 15 spots to 118 due to marginal decline in utilities and transportation prices.
